Lena Wilson-Martinez

Welcome ceramfam! I’m a ceramic artist who just graduated with a B.F.A. from Texas State University. I’m inspired by horror movies and popular culture, which I turn into storytelling by creating new characters or scenes out of clay.

In my functional ceramic practice, I create visually entertaining ware, allowing people to get excited about using it. The kind of creative ware that makes people say, “Get the good plates out” when they have guests. The biggest compliment I can receive in my art practice is knowing someone uses my creations daily. While working at my family’s restaurant, I became aware of our daily relationship with ceramics. It’s a beautiful thought that something I made, which feeds my soul, is used to serve food that nourishes the body. An action resembling how making the food would aid my chef mother’s need for creativity and service.

I’m attracted to the tactile nature of clay; my hands and touch go into everything I make. When users pick up the vessels I’ve made, they connect directly to me and my touch. It’s comforting to know that I’m leaving parts of myself that will outlast my life cycle here with every piece I make.

See y’all around the studio XD
